Funding the restoration
The church was placed on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register in 2021, recorded as being in 'very bad' condition with Priority A status (immediate risk of further rapid deterioration or loss of fabric).
An Expression of Interest was submitted to the National Lottery Heritage Fund (Heritage Fund) in 2019. Utilising its reserves, the PCC invested in Condition Surveys required for a Development Stage bid to the Heritage Fund in November 2023. A grant was approved for initial assessments and assistance with fundraising and employment of a professional Quantity Surveyor.
We have been superbly supported throughout this project by the Heritage Fund and have now successfully completed our Development Phase. We have fully costed designs at RIBA Stage 3+, a Procurement Strategy for a principal contractor and a detailed Activity Plan.
Our Delivery Stage bid to Heritage Fund is submitted and we expect a decision by December 2026, with 'Permission to Start' expected 1-2 months after that.
For the work to be fully funded, Match Funding is required. Some has been secured or pledged from PCC reserves and various charitable foundations.
However, more is required - hopefully from public and business subscriptions. This is where you can help.
Your donation to Hammerbeams, Heritage and Health will preserve the church and support community events and activities.
